The Flash at Writing Posts

with 14 comments
This is something I was thinking about when I was writing up review. Shortly after, I tweeted out a series of random questions on the typing speed of anyone listening. I don't think I got replies, but that's what struck this discussion.

I am a really fast typer. I've done NaNoWriMo and I never find it hard to win. In fact, last year, I ended up finishing a week early. I can write about a thousand words in twenty minutes if I really try. I think this says a lot about me and how much time I spend on the computer, which is [really] sad.

But it didn't always use to be like that. I remember how much I struggled as a kid. At one point, I resorted to just using my pointer fingers because I felt like it was easier that way. [People also made fun of me because I'm Asian and there's this stereotype that I'm supposed to be good with computer. Like please, I fried my motherboard twice.]
Now, the way I type consists of me feeling the keys. If you asked me which key was to the right of "G," I actually wouldn't be able to tell you. It's like my fingers know where they're going, even though my mind doesn't. But if you give me a blindfold and a keyboard, I can type out an entire essay [with some spelling mistakes, obviously.]

But I digress.

Do you ever feel like it takes a long/short time to post? I remember that it used to take me hours to write a review. This was partly because my reviews were longer than the Harry Potter books. But a lot of it was due to my typing speed. I know a bunch of people who love to type even though they're slower than some people who can type three thousand words a minute.

I've always considered myself pretty good at writing posts, as long as I know exactly what I want. I can knock a review in about ten minutes with another good fifteen for the post formatting. However, this has come to practice. I remember my early discussions took me forever to write because I kept making crazy spelling mistakes. Some of you don't realize this but even though I'm really young, I've been blogging for more than two years [I just refuse to admit it. I will turn one year old over and over again until I decide to move on.]

Also to add, do you find it easy or hard to schedule posts a week in advanced? From what I know, doing posts ahead of time either means you're knocking out multiple posts a day or when you're writing, you haven't posted yet. I'm not even close to being ahead right now but I want to work on it. [This post was written Sunday.]
I also believe that being able to do posts in advanced is about the typing speed with how much free time someone has.

I'm curious as to how it is for you. Are you slow at typing and does it bother you when it comes to writing posts? Are you slow but would like to get speedier? Or are you as fast as I am, able to do a bunch of tricks, like recite the alphabet backwards as you type? I don't know, but I sure would like to.

Ooh, great post! I never really thought about my typing speed until I hit high school, and then we were required to bring our computers to every class and I realised that I'm actually a really fast typer (at least compared to people in my classes!). Still, though, I've never seen it as something that affects me personally - it's kind of just a fact of life. I have brown eyes, I like books, and I'm a fast typer. It's not something I see as abnormal! ;)

With that being said, though, it usually takes me longer than others to write out all my posts. Most of that time is taken up by editing - I'm such a perfectionist, and that translates into meticulous editing. It doesn't have to do with my typing speed so much as the fact that I'm never satisfied by what I write! :P

i did that in middle school! that's when i started to get good. i've been told that it's abnormal [and then people offer to pay me to type up their three thousand word essays for them. urgh] i know what you mean about writing out posts and not liking them. i try to edit once but then end up doing it like five times. i feeel you <3

I used to type really fast before but now I suck! I have this new thing where I think my brain works faster than my hands because I hit the space bar before I'm even done with the word. Kin d of lik e thi s. It's annoying!

oh my god i hate that so much. i typically don't use capitals unless i'm writing something people are going to read and take seriously. in most of my comments, i don't capitalize unless i'm squealing. it just feels more natural to me. but random spaces kill me. i do it too.

I used to be so bad at typing, too, but I guess that's where everybody starts out. Now, I use my computer at school and at home all the time, so with practice I can type much more accurately and much faster. Also, I love scheduling posts. I've started this thing where I binge write posts at the beginning of the month and schedule them so that I don't have to write posts sporadically throughout the month and can spend more time replying to comments and commenting on other blogs. Of course I also have some flexibility and if I'm doing a linkup, I can always add it in to my schedule. The pre-scheduled posts are just there to take away the stress so blogging stays fun.

What you just described are my GOALS. I want to be able to do that but I'm the laziest person in the world, which also makes me a little bit sad. Alas! One can dream. also, that is amazing. good for you!!!

I'm a fast typer, but I don't feel like I'm fast at writing posts. On average, I type 90 wpm, so you would think I could type posts out like nothing. But I put a lot of thought into my posts and often delete and rewrite segments (usually I have to try and take bits out because I write so darn much) so really it takes me like a half hour to write a single post and then I'm too exhausted to do anything else :P But I'm not bothered by it. It just sucks when I want to be scheduled further ahead than I am and yet can't ever write more than one post at a time!

I type pretty fast and it usually doesn't take me long to write posts. My problem is usually coming up with ideas haha. As far as reviews go, I'm good about writing and scheduling reviews (I have some scheduled up until March) but that's only because I can't move on to another book until I write my review of the one I just read. Seriously, it's a problem. It's like I have OCD when it comes to that. I just know that I have terrible book amnesia so I know if I read several books and then try to write reviews for each one, it just wouldn't work haha.

We both know I'm pretty ahead on my posting schedule :P But it takes me a longgggggggggg time to write them. 4 hours usually. Yeah. I procrastinate. A lot. WHOOPS. And lol same. NO IDEA WHAT KEYS ARE NEXT TO EACH OTHER. It's just habit

I take such a long time to write out my reviews and some of my posts but not because of my typing speed. I used to not be able to touch type at all. My mum first got me to learn while I was in grade 3 but I gave up and then gave up again in grade 5. It wasn't until grade 7 when I was finally like I HAVE TO LEARN THIS so I did using the BBC typing games and now I'd say I'm pretty good! Definitely not the fastest but not too slow either! It takes me long to post because I always end up hating what I say. Like I'll write something and then change a billion times before I like how it sounds. Which sometimes ends up making my posts sound really weird, like they don't properly flow into each other which is because of a lack of editing.

And scheduling posts? Has never happened and probably never will. I might make an attempt to do so later on but right now it seems like I'm more of a pantser just write as I go along.

OH MY GOSH DANCE MAT TYPING? THAT WAS BOMB IN LIKE GRADE 3 FOR MY CLASS YESSSSSS <3

I feel like a lot of people are like that, hating their writing. I do it too but then decide that it isn't going to get better, so I might as well accept it. right?

I type pretty fast but I have no idea where that came from. Practice probably? Hahaha My reviews take ages though, purely because I like to dig deep and I think I confuse even myself sometimes. Plus those metaphors can take a long time LOL FORMATTING is what takes the longest. That and proof reading. Sometimes I make the oddest tense mistakes and half the time I don't even catch them. WHICH SUCKS. But I try with the proof reading. It's hard though. Formatting always bites me in the ass though. Sometimes technology just hates me. I'm trying to schedule for February right now but it's time consuming, purely because I'm lazy. But once I sit down and crack it out, I should have things up and running! Definitely an interesting post. I loved it, Nova! x

I type quite fast and I know where all the letters are but I only use my index fingers to type. I can't do it with the right fingers at all. I think writing a post can take anything from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on what I'm writing about. I'm in a bit of a review rut at the moment and I just can't seem to write them very well. If I have a discussion post to do and it's fresh in my mind then I can do it quite quickly though.
