And to think that these characters would've learned that playing karma police has its consequences from the first time around. So much of what I loved about Burn For Burn was not present in this sequel. - Nova @ Out of Time
After reading this book, I was a lot of emotions. Angry? Upset? Annoyed? And then after checking the Goodreads reviews, shocked. This book got such a high reception which leaves me in the position of the Black Sheep.
First off, if you haven't read the first book, you won't understand what I'm so upset about in full. I'll make this non-spoilery. Three characters were brought together in the first book because they all had a score to settle. This included revenge plots and ultimately, a big price to pay. Now, if I were in this situation, after standing in my own wreckage [which is the way the first book ended], my next move would totally be to relapse and start up more trouble. Because that's the smart thing to do.
That's how Fire with Fire went. These girls just don't know when to quit. I was disgusted and lost any connection I had to them. Yes, I understand that them being petty was the whole plot, but still! I didn't expect them to become the characters from the first book again, like there was no development at all! It made me want to DNF. I found myself hating the characters until the end; especially Lillia. Can someone say Mary Sue?
I had a problem with her in the first book but everything multiplied tenfold when every character started falling in love with her. She's also a hypocrite, hating a girl who pretty much is her. Plus, she has these whining episodes about her problems when she doesn't even have it bad.
Another thing about this book that absolutely made me want to bash my head in a wall: the length. This book is a whopping 500+ pages and I only really care about a quarter of that. Only a quarter of it is real story. Everything else is fluff, filler and mind numbing Lillia complaining about how she doesn't know which guy to choose. [No one ever mentioned it, but there is a threat of a love triangle!]
The only thing that made me continue was because of Mary's story. I wasn't sure what to expect from it and when the bomb dropped, I was definitely intrigued. That caused my curious brain to pick up the third one and if it's anything like this, I'm going to be writing another review.
Because some of what I enjoyed in Burn for Burn [characters and their different POVs showing writing skill] carried over, I can't say I detested this. However, most of this book was Lillia whining, Kat trying to fix her own life and Mary being out of the loop.

When sweet revenge turns sour… Book two of a trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian.
Lillia, Kat, and Mary had the perfect plan. Work together in secret to take down the people who wronged them. But things didn’t exactly go the way they’d hoped at the Homecoming Dance.
Not even close.
For now, it looks like they got away with it. All they have to do is move on and pick up the pieces, forget there ever was a pact. But it’s not easy, not when Reeve is still a total jerk and Rennie’s meaner than she ever was before.
And then there’s sweet little Mary…she knows there’s something seriously wrong with her. If she can’t control her anger, she’s sure that someone will get hurt even worse than Reeve was. Mary understands now that it’s not just that Reeve bullied her—it’s that he made her love him.
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, burn for a burn. A broken heart for a broken heart. The girls are up to the task. They’ll make Reeve fall in love with Lillia and then they will crush him. It’s the only way he’ll learn.
It seems once a fire is lit, the only thing you can do is let it burn...
