IT'S MY BIRTHDAY PARTY + 3 GIVEAWAYS!

with 61 comments

It has come time again for me to turn one year older. I don't know about you guys, but at fifteen sixteen years old, the thought of getting older still terrifies me. Maybe it's because I still feel like a child inside, or maybe because I'm basically fighting with my maturity so I don't become one of those evil grown ups [not to imply that all grown-ups are evil, that's certainly not true. I've met quite a few who are wonderful and feed me.]

But let's get into the festivities, shall we?

Last year, I wrote all about the things I'd accomplished in the year but now that I think about it, that topic feels more like an "end of year" thing. So, as always with Out of Time, we'll be mixing it up [shaken, not stirred] and doing a day full of festivities.

Since I'm still in school [crying], I'm just going to try to bring a little sunshine to this corner of the internet. You can find a birthday post thingy on every single one of my social media and all birthday things will be different, meaning that I'm churning out content like crazy tonight. And look, it's only 10:23 PM! [I'm a heavy procrastinator - sixteen years old and nothing has changed.]

But, "WHAT?" you ask, is the topic of this post? Well, it's quite simple, really. I have sixteen candles and therefore, sixteen wishes. I know. I know. The old saying is that if you tell anyone your wishes, they won't come true. Well, that superstition never met anyone as determined and driven as me [let's forget that yesterday, I laid in on the floor with a little bit of cheese dust on my shirt] and I would just love to tell you about my dreams ; sixteen of them.
warning: this post got a little deep the more I got into it. I just... I have so many things I want to do and hopefully, time will slow down so I can do everything I want need

sixteen candles ; sixteen wishes

1. Fly. More specifically, travel. The city, the country, the world, the universe [if you have enough money, go for it!]

2. Go to your dream university. [Keeping quiet on this one for... reasons.]

3. Produce an album and sell it in any way I can.

4. Find a love so great it makes The Notebook look like an understatement.

5. Take pictures in every country in the world.

6. Graduate ____ feeling like I've done something with the time and money spent.

7. Give a speech on how we all have to love ourselves and how it's a lifelong battle with the biggest pot of gold you've ever seen at the end.

8. Attend a Broadway show and bite my tongue to keep me from singing along with the cast.

9. Attend a red carpet premiere [even if I have to hide in the bushes.]

10. Learn close up magic - and yes, I have to blame my favorite movie for instilling this desire in me.

11. Go back to my hometown with post-it notes saying, "Nova was here." Stick them everywhere so there will always be a piece of me in the city.

12. Publish a young adult novel. I'm little but I'm coming for the crown.

13. Do more charity because I understand it now, I'm poorer now, leave my door unlocked, it's pouring out. Mom always said "home is where the heart is" but I believe that "home has enough space for one or two more hearts."

14. Take a fantasy novel and using a black sharpie, edit the contents so the main character is now me and I'll be off slaying dragons. Call it a biography.

15. Pray more often - not for personal reasons, but for others who need it. Remember that the universe extends past what I can see.

16. Go to sleep before the stars come out because there is always tomorrow and I can say hello to them, then. Right now, I need your sleep for tomorrow's exam.

So now you know my dreams. With this knowledge, I do hope you'll be cheering me on [or at least, giving me a grudging pat on the back] and I hope I'll find myself contented with what I've done with my life. My birthday, truth be told, is not that big of a deal - it's just a date. What is a big deal, to me at least, is being able to share memories with you guys, being able to thank you for your kindnesses and being able to...

The Blogger Aesthetic Guessing Game #1

with 33 comments
A while back, I tweeted asking if people wanted me to make them an aesthetic for their blog. I was overwhelmed with the amount of replies [like 44!] and set to work. After making like ten, I can say that I definitely have a system going on and while this isn't a "how-to" post, I'll definitely make one in the future. I also did run a poll and got lots of people asking for a "how to" post.

If you're reading this going, "what the heck is an aesthetic?" don't worry, I have you covered. While I'm not the best at explaining this, I hope it's clear enough. There were people asking me what I was going on about [those people... oddly still wanted an aesthetic despite not knowing what is it. Guys, what if it's code for "punch you in the face"? What then?]

blogger aesthetic : the way i create them is an 8 paneled picture collage embodying a certain theme using anything like similar topics, similar colors or based around one general idea. aesthetic in general just means beauty so think of it as me taking the best parts of you and your blog and turning it into an image. notice that this entire definition is written in lowercase? that's part of the aesthetic. although, i really dislike doing that for full blog posts so i'm about to switch....

Right now.

If that wasn't clear at all, have no fear! I'm going to be using an example and then you are going to play a rad guessing game to test your knowledge of bloggers, my accuracy on these aesthetics and to meet some new bloggers you may not have known. My aesthetics actually did cause two of my faves to meet each other and I felt like such a wizard, haha.

The way my aesthetics work:

My guessing game doesn't really give good clues so I'm going to do a few explanations right here.

Guess this blogger! Just kidding - it's me. When it comes to blogger/blog aesthetics, it can be really hard to create some of these. I've come to realize that a lot of blogs are fond of purple and any blog that has more than two main colors, kills me in terms of finding images. All the complaining aside [I swear, I love doing this], the color scheme is determined by a blogger's blog design. The images, however, are based on their personality and interests. For example, I have an interest in travelling, music, starry stuff and my queen, Halsey. Writing and reading are kind of a given and I'm pretty sure every blogger's has something to do with books. And when you look at the color scheme of this aesthetic, hopefully it reminds you of me.

Let's see how well you do in the game! Leave a comment with your guesses from #1-#10!

Blogger #1 - Kit @ Let the Pages Reign

  • This is a blogger I only recently met.
  • Her name is in this picture somewhere.
  • She likes history and psychology.

Blogger #2 - Alyssa @ The Devil Orders Takeout

  • Most of this blogger's photos are from her pinterest.
  • At least half of these pictures are more in relation to her novel, than herself.

Blogger #3 - Liran @ Empress of Books

  • The love that split the nails.
  • Me and this blogger were talking about how her aesthetic was going to be mostly black. I joked that I would put pink in there somewhere - not a joke.

Blogger #4 - Tessa @ Crazy For YA

  • This blogger goes by a beloved character's name as an alias for blogging.
  • I actually messed up this aesthetic a little... the blog is peach and blue, but mainly peach and I did mainly blue.
  • No but seriously, one picture in this aesthetic should be a dead giveaway.

Blogger #5 - Emily @ Loony Literate

  • The type of flowers is this blogger's favorite. It's also part of the title to her novel.
  • The Harry Potter reference directly relates to the blog.

Blogger #6 - Topaz @ Six Impossible Things

  • One of my favorite bloggers ever who writes beautiful poetry.
  • The fact that she's blogger #6 relates to her/her blog in some way [kind of a big way...?]
  • Her full name is in the picture somewhere. I thought I was so clever with this.

Blogger #7 - Alex @ Fiery Reads

  • Possibly my favorite aesthetic because the blog design isn't a cool color.
  • The blog's name directly relates to the color scheme in some way.
  • Interests include field hockey and the blogger likes to watch TV but the real clue again, is in the color scheme.

Blogger # 8 - Aneeqah @ Writing Hustle/My Not So Real Life

  • One of my bullet journalling friends!
  • This girl is a great editor and along with a book blog, she also has a writing blog.
  • One of these pictures on the right side relates to the name of her book blog.

Blogger #9 - Emily @ Forever Literary

  • This blogger loves to learn: specifically.
  • She's obsessed with English culture.
  • Loves maps.
  • Shares the name of one of the previous bloggers in this guessing game.

Blogger #10 -

  • This was the first aesthetic I ever made. That's why the sizing is so messed up - I didn't really know what I was doing.
  • This blogger is also a popular instagrammer with a lovely feed.
  • This isn't even an exaggeration of how well put this girl's aesthetic is.

Well, that's it! Leave me a comment with your guesses from 1-10 and let me know if you like this game. It does take at least half an hour for each aesthetic so there is lots of time to be taken for me to actually make these aesthetics well.
And after you've commented, come back to these links below to see how many you got right! You can also high light the space beside "blogger #" above each aesthetic for the reveal. For the ones you didn't know, why not drop a line to the blogger and say hi?

A Ten Day Hiatus

with 9 comments

Hey guys!

I just wanted to post a quick message. I've been feeling really down because the entire month of July has kind of been a letdown. I started an online course for summer school and that's taken up all my time.

I haven't been posting at all and I feel so bad for that. Even worse, I haven't had the time to reply to your lovely comments. I appreciate them, I swear! I have a lot of drafts of what I think are great posts but I don't have the time to write them. Even the last few posts were written last minute and I wasn't very happy with the quality. I don't want this blog to be a bunch of half-assed posts so I think it's better to just stop entirely until I can get everything together.

So because of that, I think I'm going to go on hiatus until the 25th. So yeah... a ten day hiatus? It isn't that long. I just don't want to keep posting content and not have the time to either read your posts or not update consistently.

Alright guys, see ya when this hell of a course is over.

My/Blog Birthday Post (+ GIVEAWAY!)

with 48 comments

When I first started my blog, I didn't record the day I started. All I know is that it was somewhere in June. Since the 13th is my birthday, I figured, why not combine the two? That way it's easier to put a post together. [Can you tell how lazy I am?

So yes, today is both the birth date of moi and the birth date of Out of Time. I'm flailing because it's been some years and now I'm the big one five!!!!!!

mandatory Taylor Swift gif.
I wanted to share with you a few things that happened this year to me and a few things that happened to the blog. You don't have to read them all but I wanted to write this post because I'm so happy for my accomplishments.

LIFESTUFFS

  • I discovered 8tracks and it is magical.
  • I started grade 9 and with the help of some super angelic grade 12's, my year was easy to get through and loads of fun.
  • Shoutout to the cookies in the cafeteria and the energy drinks in the vending machine - you two kept me sane.
  • I started writing poetry!
  • I started wattpad again and even though I've been having a billion month hiatus, I'm proud of reaching 10k on a story.
  • I wrote more music.
  • Yes, basically I did a lot of writing.
  • I made friends with so many people it's unreal!! Seriously, I just became some kind of social unicorn. [Butterflies are too mainstream.]
  • Without notice, I stood up in the middle of the cafeteria [400+ students] and sang Blank Space for karaoke. It was such a rush omg.
  • I dyed my hair purple.
  • I'm two steps closer to mastering the art of the winged eyeliner.
  • My grades are looking so good compared to last year.
  • I've perfected the art of making fun of my teachers [as a joke] and not getting in trouble for it.
  • I found the courage to wear bright colored lipstick to school and never have I once looked back.
  • Mom, I'm happy to announce that I'm not doing drugs [like you were so worried I would be.]
  • I started watching more shows - The 100, OITNB, Teen Wolf, TVD and I'm going to start iZombie because of recs!
  • I went out with my friends more than once. [I am an anti social honey badger 95% of the time so this is huge.]
  • I MADE COLLAGES IN MY ROOM AND THEY'RE SPECTACULAR!
  • I'm learning Fur Elise on the piano and I'm in looooooooove.

BOOKSTUFFS

  •  I met Jenny Han!!!!!!
  • I got a bunch of ARCs from Macmillian, the unattainable publisher for so long.
  • I started commenting on others' blogs and made a shizzle-load of friends.
  • Out of Time became more of a writing blog than just strictly books.
  • I got over 1000 comments on my blog this year alone and it's only June. WTF?????? I LOVE YOU!
  • All the epic discussions on twitter - I see you.
  • I've gotten a few Goodreads reviews deleted because I'm "reviewing the author" when I state reasons I don't want to read their book. I feel like such a badass.
  • ALL THE 2k15 DEBUTS!
  • I read my first Sarah J. Maas! [ACOTAR]
  • I started the YOU Are Appreciated Project in light of all you awesome people.
  • I started a bookstagram account.
  • I tried putting gifs in my reviews and they're lovely.
  • I did 3xAMA for the second year and it went off even better than I thought.
  • People add me in their weekly linkups and I know it doesn't take that much time for one link but it makes me feel SO GOOD. You don't even know.
  • I started doing book tags and guys, they are SO MUCH FUN. WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER?
  • I WANTED to put a list of all the bloggers/authors who made my year but I realize that it'll be too long. Basically, if you've ever left a comment on my blog or if I've ever left one on yours, you're on that list. [And not to MAKE you comment on this post, but if you do, I will be writing you one of those TBH messages because I'm feeling ALL THE LOVE right now.]

The main thing I was trying to get in both lists is that I'm stepping out of my comfort zone. Last year, I would never have dreamed of wearing lipstick to school or doing photography. Now, I'm really grateful for all the support that's given me the confidence to do this kind of stuff. You guys are all appreciated. And I love you so much. Thanks for making this the BEST birthday so far, for Out of Time and myself.

GIVEAWAY

WHY NOT GIVE STUFF AWAY ON MY BIRTHDAY? I love presents myself so might as well spread that love, ehhhhhhhhhh? [I actually don't even say eh that much haha.] And this is open INT. Most of my friends aren't even in the US/CAN so let's open this up like a present!!!!

YOU are Appreciated! - a Blogger/Author Love Project

with 31 comments

It's Monday and there's no review, I know! I'm all about being spontaneous and seeing the tension from last night, my brain is working at it's 5% to bring you this project. See gif above.

Yes, there might be technical problems and little roadblocks but I am doing the best I can with the time that I have. Basically, all you need to know is that this is a project that involves making all of us feel appreciated because above all else, I feel as though no matter the popularity authors, bloggers and even humans just want to be heard and acknowledged so this project is meant to acknowledge your beautiful hair or your bubbly personality or how you're a social justice activist [those people are so cool, though.]

Explanation

I remember, a while ago, that someone did this thing where they would pull a name out of a hat and that person would get a compliment or a really nice note. This would happen every day until the names were gone or the names were just put back and the entire cycle would start over.

So, wouldn't it be cool if we did that as a community? I would be the Hermes [messenger] and it would be you guys writing the really nice messages and sending them to me [via google form] to send out to the person's email. I'll definitely add whenever I can [and since I'm such a ball of sunshine I'll definitely be adding a LOT.] I don't know if we'd be able to do a full 365 days but I'm willing to do this as long as I've got your support/messages.

How?

This is a two step process. Still with me? Amazing.

First, below is a linky where you can add your name and your blog [ex. Nova @ Out of Time] saying that you will be sending a nice message to someone and that you're participating in spreading love.
This is so I can keep track of the people and it'll help in Step Two.

Step twooooooo! Below is a form that you can fill in as many times as you want. I actually encourage multiple messages because most likely, you love more than one author/blogger. Basically, if there are a BUNCH of people you want to write messages to and you've got time - go ahead! It doesn't have to be an essay long, it can literally be the length of a tweet or a short paragraph. It all depends on you.
Also, it goes without saying, but the message will only be seen by the person and me. I would never show it to anyone it isn't addressed to.

Now here's where the linky thing comes in handy. It's always nice to praise big bloggers but the people in the linky [who are being so kind already] deserve love too. Please consider writing something nice about them! As a smaller blogger, I know how it feels to be left out in a love fest and I don't want that happening to anyone else! <3

So that's it! I hope it sounds simple enough. My mind cannot stop creating ideas like this and if it's complicated and you're confused, please ask any questions below! I'll start sending stuff out as soon as I start getting some feedback. And even if I don't, I'll probably end up sending some nice emails myself (:

#LoveAThon 2015

with 22 comments

Hello beautiful people [to those who've read my blog before and those who haven't!] I'm totally stoked for this year's LoveAThon! I was part of last year's and it was honestly one of the most rewarding moments in the year to be able to talk to fellow bloggers [some of which I didn't know previously!]

I'm deciding not to do challenges this year. I'm not really that type of person and I'd really like to take the time to just spread love! That being said, I posted the questionaire so you can get to know me. I'll also be around the blogosphere, commenting on posts!

What’s your name?

My name is Nova.

Where in the world are you blogging from?

I'm from the humble city of Toronto in Canda.

How did you get into blogging in the first place?

One of my friends and I had the idea to start a book blog. It's actually still up somewhere because she never took it down. While the idea ended up going down in flames, I was inspired to create my own. It took me maybe two years to get SERIOUS about blogging but once I did, I can't imagine doing anything else.

How did you come up with your blog name?

This may quite possibly be my favorite question. My blog name is not specifically bookish, which some people pick up on. From the header, you also see music notes [because music is life, obviously.] Anyway, Out of Time talks about my nasty TBR pile. "Too many books and I'm out of time" is what inspired me.
It also talks about being out of tempo in a musical sense.

What genre do you read and review the most on your blog?

I read YA only. I love every genre but I love fantasy and historical fiction a little less than the others. Oops!

What other types of posts do you do on your blog, apart from reviews?

I do song reviews, sarcastic lists [which are called Mandatory Rules On], comparing books with songs [Novel Melodies], rants and discussions!

Best blogging experience so far?

Discovering Twitter and going insane on it! Seriously, in like the first month, I was up 11k tweets. Plus, twitter is really what got me "known."

Favorite thing about the blogging community?

No one [I know] cares about age differences! I have friends who are thirty and I have friends who are thirteen. We're all just trying to spread love for books!

Name the 5 books you’re most excited for this 2015!

Hotel Ruby - Suzanne Young, Winter - Marissa Meyer, I'll Meet You There - Heather Demetrios, Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo and Ice Like Fire - Sara Raasch!
[Oh my gosh, it was SO HARD to pick these.]

What’s an underrated book or series that you think everyone should read?

There's this book I read in 2013 [I think] that was originally called Secret for a Song. Now, it's published under "One Last Song" and holy shizzles, that book just about BROKE ME.

Which book boy or girl would be your book BFF?

My book BFF? Oh, I've never really given much thought to that. HMMMMM... How about Caymen from The Distance Between Us [Kasie West]? I LOVE her personality!

Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?

Music, mainly! I've played piano for nine years and counting [although I'm not as good as I'd like to be.] I also play clarinet for school for four years and counting! It's so much fun to play with a band. Lastly, I sing but I don't take lessons. Singing is just a lot of fun!

Besides music, I'm also really interested in writing. I've been posting on wattpad and the feedback I'm receiving is AMAZING. Like "whoa, you guys actually like the thi

Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for?

Um... I don't buy books. Eep! I feel like the only blogger but it's true. I'm not really good with the whole money situation so books are an occasional thing.
However, I do like [occasionally] shopping for Target brand makeup!

At a party, the DJ suddenly changes the song – and it’s your song. What song would be playing?

Don't judge me, but the song would have to be Habits by Tove Lo. When I first heard it, I was like "THIS IS MY SONG" even though it's got a not-so-good message.
That or Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy. I think that's so danceable!
[Extra note: I WOULD choose Taylor Swift, but since I heard that everyone else is doing it, I figured, let's be a bit different. BUT GUYS. WILDEST DREAMS IS <33333]

Pick out either a book you want turned into a film/TV show, or a film/TV show you want turned into a book.

I totally want the Grisha trilogy as a movie. I have NO IDEA how that would work, but if it could happen, I WOULD CRY OF HAPPINESS.

So that's all, my fabulous friends! And even if you don't know me, I consider you a friend. *waves*
Remember that you are loved. You are appreciated. And that this community would not be the same without you. If you are new and feel alone, reach out to us. No one is as scary as they seem, even though some bloggers seem SO INTIMIDATING! This is a chance to make new friends, make someone's day and just be kind.

I hope you'll do the same <3

DIY Dressertop Collage - The Highlight of My Winter Break

with 9 comments
As part of my winter break, I decided that making a collage on my dresser top would be a good idea. Let me explain: In my room, I've got this 4x1 (ft) dresser that's got a plain white top with a piece of class that goes  over. Kind of looks like a coffee table. Kind of not? Anyway, every time I look at it since I bought it [which is like two years now?], I can't help but feel that it's empty.

And guys, I am one of the least creative people in the world when it comes to physical art projects. If I could paint on that dresser top, I would, but I can't. So LIGHTBULB! I thought, why not do a collage on the dresser itself and then put the glass back on?

This project took about ten hours with over seventy images from google. Everything has a meaning and reason and I'll be going through what I've done.

First, I compiled a list of google pictures and stuck them all in a folder. This is the easy part. Excuse me trying to be tumblr from the picture to the side.

These pictures included tumblr scenery, musicians, quotes/lyrics and a LOT LOT LOT of what I think is fandom stuff! I wanted this collage to represent something but I didn't know what. It was kind of a risky project because I was going in it without ANY direction and looking at the final product, I realize that it does have meaning. It's my identity in pictures.

But let's keep going! After I finished this, I started cutting, assembling and taping. This is the part that took 10 hours. Pictures were cut with funny shapes and scrambled everywhere without much rhyme or reason but the chaos looks pretty legit in the end. And that represents me a lot!

To the left side is a picture of what work looked like after about a half hour. Yes, that is me accidentally putting two different Nina's beside each other. Oops.
To the right is more like after an hour and a half.

Also, I wish I had more picture of my process but I don't! I was just really focused on finishing and here it is. And yes, I realize that you can't see anything. I did say that it's big! Plus, look at my widdle tv just hanging there! [You can also see my fabulous window; totally a million dollar view.]

However, never fear as I'll be doing something I don't usually do: take pictures. [No seriously, I'm usually so bad at taking pics!]

I would recommend clicking to make these bigger! [like I said, I'm not even close to
being a good photographer. Haha!

But wait, this is not enough. I'm going to have to start snapping close ups of things in catagories I've created. Warning: I might get carried away, oops.

Bookish Things!

  • It's a Jamie McGuire quote because <3
  • And then all the Herondale Boys with their Parabatais, courtesy of Cassandra Jean.
  • Tumblr girl issues call for TFIOS. I'm sorry, okay? [okay.]
  • To be honest, I haven't read Perks, but I really love this quote so much!
  • And how could I forget a Cinder quote when I've met Marissa twice???
  • Dauntless? Who could forget Divergent? I mean, I didn't like the movie as much as the book, but MEMORIES!
  • The free little library just looked cute so I used it! Plus, tumblr as everything!

Lyrics

  • I feel like I should've had more in this category but I guess it didn't work out that way [you can also count the peeking Sweater Weather in the third picture if you want to get technical.]
  • The first pic has two lyrics! The black on white one is a Taylor Swift quote from "Enchanted" [I FREAKING LOVE THAT SONG] and the white on black one is from "Gimme Sympathy" by Metric. [Also, if you really want to, the picture behind Marina's head is from A Drop in the Ocean.
  • ED SHEERAN <33333 [Also the drawing of him is super cute!]
  • It's an old song but it's a mainstream old song so I can't even brag about loving Iris. [It's still a great song, though]
  • Let's bring back Taylor, again! [Seriously, the amount of Tay pictures I have on this collage is sad] These are all the unique lines from Enchanted because that song is newest obsession!
  • I also have a Polaroid of Taylor with "Wildest Dreams" lyrics on it but I think we're good with the whole "Nova likes Taylor" thing.
  • Lastly but not least [in the slightest!] we have Fall Out Boy and this is my favorite lyric in Miss Missing You and quite possibly the entire album.

"The person that you'd take a bullet for is behind the trigger"

- Fall Out Boy, Miss Missing You

People

This has an EMBARRASSINGLY large amount so bear with me!

  • That hot male model in the corner is Francisco Lachowski. Like, heart eyes emojis??? Well, actually the real reason I put him on the collage is because every wattpad novel ever has him casted as the main "hot guy" [excluding fanfictions.] I wonder why everyone things the entire population of wattpad are teenage girls?
  • Then let's keep talking about hot guys because the beautiful male taking a rainbow drag beside him is the one, the only, Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco. Their music is amazing and as a musician, I can only aspire to achieve their level of talent.
  • Wow, all the musicians huh? The fabulous lady with the green hair is Jenna This is just classic J-Law.
  • My dirty mind cannot resist this Captain Hook line. Plus, my parents told me nothing blatantly dirty, so I went for questionable.
  • I didn't really like Les Miserables because of CERTAIN actors but God, this scene.
  • No reason needed. This is queen Slaylor and she slays.
  • Lindsey Stirling [aka the most amazing violinist + EDM creator] and then Ebba Zingmark, who looks like Queen Slaylor. But seriously, go listen to Lindsey Stirling if you haven't yet. She's wonderful.
  • My first YouTube musician, Christina Grimmie! There's just so much love for her, even though she isn't as out there as she used to be. Love her 2013 album, With Love <3
  • Hehe, second appearance of the two Ninas.
  • Paramore, another band that owns my heart! I really like their old music, not so much their new. Yes, I'm one of those fans. I support them, I just don't like it as much. The whole punk rock thing was great.
