I've been drafting this idea for a week now, playing with how I want to do it because I never saved screenshots of my previous blog designs. So just because I seem to have a lot of time on my hands, all the screenshots of my "designs" have been recreated for this project. [I opened a test blog and created the layout. That's also why there are no posts and no widgets on the side.]
After thinking about where I am as a blogger, I realize that I need to do a post in which I show you all my embarrassing blog designs through the years. And embarrassing, they are. I wasn't able to afford a designer so all the ones below are done by yours truly, except the current one which was done by the amazing Stephanie @ These Paper Hearts.
What you see might SHOCK you. It was pretty bad, guys. I don't know how I achieved this "niceness" but it definitely wasn't without YEARS of trial and error [mainly error.]
My blog is not new. I hate telling people my age because I didn't "get" blogging until years after I started. I don't completely get it, even now. There was just a lot I didn't understand and I was only introduced to the community a year and a half after I started so for that time, I was riding lone wolf.
So I won't be putting specific dates and now you know why.
2012
Like a few other bloggers I know, my first venture in the blogosphere was for a school project. I teamed up with my friend, Maddie to create a blog known as "Bookaholics Ink." which is a pun on the word "inc." We were 12, leave us alone. I quickly ditched the idea, as you can see, we gave up only a few months after we launched.
We used the blogger templates and didn't create ANYTHING new at all.
If you can read it in the last post, I do say that I'm in the middle of starting my own blog. Obviously, I've deleted it now but BOOM. This was the original "Out of Time," known as "Nova, the eBook Nerd." I had the "brilliant" idea to review wattpad books even though most of ones I reviewed are written by inexperienced writers with big heads who think their work is the shit because they've got millions of reads.
So glad I stuffed that idea.
ALSO GET A LOOK AT THAT BUTTON. NO WONDER NO ONE WANTED ME HAHA. This was my FIRST ever venture into photoshop where I blended a book with a nova and a starry background. It looks like hell and I know. Oh well.
[ALSO PINK TEXT FONT. KILL ME NOW.]
The "Musings of a Blogder" Era
Musings of a Blogder went through like 3 different designs and I can't even fathom how I remember all three of designs. I've got nothing better to remember, I know. And they're probably in the wrong order, but it's alright, as long as I sort of got it.
Also, random fact: I actually deleted my graphics, so I scoured the web from the after finally finding them... on facebook. What even?
After a quick google search of "Supernova" the image you see in this design header and background sparked an idea for a design. At this point of my life, I was very in love with the Trajan Pro font, #sorrynotsorry. Obviously, I still have no idea what I'm doing and my design skills, if you can even call them that, are in need of work. I mean, look at my signature! It's the same one as now but the colors are all wrong. And that font for "Won't Shut Up" is BARELY legible!!!
The only thing I'm proud of is how I use "Blogger + Reader" on my header. Yes, that's what BLOGDER means. I'm not committing typo fails, I promise. However, the question mark just ruins everything. Why do I sound unsure, omg.
It took awhile, but I eventually realized that the last design was NOT the design for me. This new one is a lot more like the one I currently have. It's me starting to experiment with the jewel tones and a darker theme. I still haven't fixed up my stupid graphics, which is why they still look like that, but I'm slightly happier with the background and the header. The font is nice, in my opinion.
At this stage, I was experimenting with Dafont.com [which is where the banner font came from and the header font.]
This one actually doesn't look too bad, in my opinion. I finally fixed the background to make it look like the header blends easier. The graphics actually match the theme, except the popping effect looks weird and out of place in comparison to the title.
Since Musings of a Blogder also incorporated music, it's nice to see it in the header. The rating system would soon change to the music notes they are now but these flashy stars aren't actually too bad. In my OLD reviews, I still have the rating system as these stars because I'm way too lazy to change them. And yes! The signature was made at this stage and I think I got lucky with it because I still use it to this day!!
Out of Time - Present Time
I never realized the beauty of a solid color background. It looks awesome because there's so much going on in the header. I think that was one mistake I made in ALL my previous designs - I focused too much on the background.
Something I forgot to mention was that the blockquote was developed by Ashley @ Nose Graze during the "Musings of a Blogder" era.
The header FINALLY works for me and looks the right size! I enjoy the bursts of color and how well it matches the graphics I made, that I still use! Also, I kept the rounded edges theme in ALL of my design stages, which makes me pretty happy.
Oooh, I really liked seeing the evolution of your blog's design! Ah, the design choices we make when we're younger, eh? :P
ReplyDeleteIt's terrifying.
DeleteHonestly I really like the way your blog is now. <3 Haha: "...I reviewed are written by inexperienced writers with big heads who think their work is the shit because they've got millions of reads." Gosh this will sound TERRIBLE, but I have to confess that I dislike most oft he popular stuff there. And you're so right. Often they came across a bit arrogant. =/
ReplyDeleteI actually met you THROUGH wattpad which is really cool! I didn't know you ran a blog and your story was one that I really enjoyed ;)
DeleteIt is really neat to see how you have grown and improved. Each edition is slightly better than what you had before, although there is a definite theme (with blue and space). I like your current theme a whole lot, although I must say I miss all your supernovas. But I'm a bit of an astrophysics geek, so maybe that is just me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the nova thing was working anymore, tbh. It seems almost... weird to plan a blog around a person's name and I think the idea only came about because I was still getting used to blogging under a fake name. Now that it's pretty much become my name, it feels weird.
DeleteAhaha, I remember my first blog designs! I didn't take screenshots (Wish I did) but when I look back, man they were bad. I started off blogging with Weebly, a design can never go too bad with Weebly. Then I went with Wordpress. I tried so hard to customize that to my liking but that failed. Then I moved to Blogger. My original design is very different from my current. Honestly, my current design is my favorite one that I have made on Blogger. My original had so much of the same color and eugh. Obviously your blog went through the same as mine. It went from :Past me thinking this was the cooler thing ever" to "Present more who knows what she is doing." Loved seeing the growth! :D
ReplyDelete~Kaitlin @ Next Page Please!
Oh man, weebly. I hate that site with a burning passion because I had to do this major assignment on that platform. It sucked. And I got a C.
DeleteThanks for the love <3
Haha, I think anyone who has initially signed up on Blogger/Blogspot have experienced the really generic designs! You can still see me old one here and it's absolutely horrendous! But I love the evolution of yours, though - yeah there were some not-so-good designs, but you can really see how you've grown up from each and every one of them. Are you planning to be a designer soon, too? ;) I can see the potential!
ReplyDeleteFaye at The Social Potato
Haha, I design SMALL things like graphics because I have to but it isn't without some heartache. I'm not too good at design and I might take a media arts course so I can learn!
DeleteIt is REALLY interesting to see your evolution! I was adopted in as a co-blogger to an existing blog, so I got to cut in line and never went through these growing pains. Also, I thought using Ink for Inc was really cute (I am such a nerd).
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this It is fascinating to see how our online presence grows with us through the years!
Great imaginations has also been through some awesome designs. I'll have to admit, I really love the Oriental design the most. Maybe it's because it reminds me of my own culture? Haha, the one now is quite nice too!
DeleteHaha its nice to see how you've changed through the years, isn't it? ;) But I think almost all of us on Blogger have gone through the whole design-something-unique phase. WordPress just makes even the most generic things look so professional, sigh *shakes fist at WordPress* *turns back around and gazes adoringly at it*
ReplyDeleteBut I like how it looks like you settled in the dark background pretty early on. And we can really see the evolution in the latier half, with bits retained and some thrown out.
I daresay the present design is here to stay, though? :D
WP is... weird. I used it a few times but I don't think I'm ready to make the switch. I'm real happy with blogger right now.
DeleteAnd haha, I hope! I'm having second thoughts on the darkness of the colors but I think I like them a lot! Plus, I'm too lazy to hire a designer right now anyway. So yes, this one is here to stay.
This was actually a really cool post! Like you, my first blog was for a school blog so I had a super generic color-coded theme like you, and then I opened my first blog where I used one of blogger's normal templates but made it book themed. Then I won a free design and it was actually really great. I had this girl in my avatar on my blog button that rocked my socks off and the design itself was nice and purple and fun, but there was a lot of flaws in the HTML and the designer would get super mad at me if I asked for things to be fixed. So 1) I decided I needed a new design because she upset me but also because 2) I wanted my blog to still be fun but have a more professional focus as opposed to just kind of sweet and childish since I was entering college and wanted to be able to use my blog as a professional source, so to speak. And I love my current design. I've had it for almost two years and don't see myself changing it anytime soon because I couldn't tell you what I would want to change. And also because I have no money. hahahaha
ReplyDeleteWinning a free design is awesome! I got lucky and approached a designer who wasn't charging at the time. I think she is now, though but I still feel lucky as one of the last free customers! I love your design too! We almost have the same color scheme hehe
DeleteAH! This is great! And trust me, we all have embarrassing past blog designs, I'm SURE of it. hehe. Omg, my first 3 were just templates. So they 'looked' professional (I guess?! The content killed that though!) but there were like 8570928 other blogs out there with the same design as me. >_< I've only changed from Notebook Sisters to Paper Fury, though, so heeh, minimal change sthere. But my first "design" was HORRENDOUS. I quite love the one you have now!!
ReplyDeleteI should've used templates. I knew others who did but I wanted to put on my hipster glasses and try to design it myself. I feel like I would've saved valuable time if I had just done what everyone else did
DeleteIt's always interesting seeing how blogs have developed over time! It's more of an ongoing project isn't it? I love your current header and the simple background, it's really eye-popping.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jeanne <3
DeleteHaha! I would love to do a similar post, but I've used the same theme since I first started blogging. ;) The first one actually isn't horrible--I'm okay with bloggers using simple Blogger themes as long as their content is readable.
ReplyDeleteFor Nova, the eBook Nerd... Now that one's a bit painful to the eyes, especially the title and the two rows of menus!
And what!? I only now found out that Blogder = Blogger + Reader... Haha, sorry. ;) The third version of Musings of a Blogder definitely isn't bad! It's clean and very readable. :)
And Stephanie did a brilliant job with your current design! :)
Blogder is NOT my finest moment. I was young and everyone makes mistakes *cries in laughter* Anyway, I can't bear to change my twitter handle because as bad as it is, it's grown on me. Crap.
DeleteAnd THE TWO ROWS OF MENUS I"M SORRY I FEEL SO BAD LOLOL
Your latest design is da best!!!!!! Your designs are fab even if it's simple. Mine wasn't very good…I liked everything to be black so I think it might have pushed away a lot of readers HAHAHA I didn't do that great during my first year of blogging.
ReplyDeletewww.lite-rate-ture.com
Haha, this is the second time I am seeing this post, but the designs still don't cease to amaze me!:) No offense luv. but I am really glad that you approached Stephanie, because I just can't imagine my reaction if I saw your blog in the "Nova, the ebook nerd" era:)
ReplyDeleteI myself am horrible when it comes to design, or anything that involves html, coding etc.Thank god for blog designers! What will we do without them?:)
Okay, well to be honest, the CONTENT in the Nova, the eBook Nerd era has since been deleted and if you want to see how bad it is, I'm actually working on a post about reviews from past to now. This is going to become a series. And I just made that decision while writing this comment. Omg.
DeleteI really regret not keeping screenshots of all my old designs! Now I'm the only one who remembers anything about it haha! I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing but it must be so fun reflecing on the evolution of your blog design. Lovely post Nova!
ReplyDeleteYour blog looks fantastic now Nova, and it's always interesting to see how things have evolved as we've grown older and had different ideas about how the blog should look and represent us as bloggers. Great post!
