Push has a promising beginning and ending, so much that they're worth getting through a slow middle. - Nova @ Out of Time
After reading Rush and feeling very neutral about it, I decided to give Push a chance. After all, the concept is really interesting; I just wasn't feeling much. This is one of those series that I'll read and enjoy even though I don't rave about it.
While I can say that Push agreed more with me, it also had a set of faults that I didn't seem to find in Rush. For one, I feel like it dragged, a lot. In Push, I didn't mind so much in the beginning because I really started to understand the story but after a while, things became redundant.
Then there's a lot of mystery around the middle that was covered up by incessant teenage drama. Fine, it's a teen fiction, there's bound to be drama. But I didn't like how it hindered my reading experience and didn't add to the plot.
However, the beginning of Push completely drew me in. Feeling a lot uneasy with this book, I was prepared to let it go if I didn't find the same interest as Rush. Thankfully, the beginning was actually so spectacular. It starts right off the bat with what I felt was crippling information [in both a good and bad way] for the main character. That beginning was the reason I held onto this book and actually, now after finishing, I think it was a great idea.
Some of the same problems with Rush resurfaced in Push; mainly my inability to feel. In Rush, that percentage was about 90% and in Push, it was about a 75%. What I'm sayingis that this book made me feel a little more than the first one; especially towards the ending. My God, that ending made everything worth it [albeit, it was a little rushed.]
The writing was also the same, which was fine. I never had an issue with the writing. Come to think of it, a lot of things were the same. Aside from the main character and her male lead, the rest of the characters seemed very static. But they don't even get mentioned that much, so it doesn't matter. [Two problems in one!]
Overall, I enjoyed reading it. I don't feel like I was cheated out of my time because while the middle wasn't great, the beginning and ending are larger parts that I ended up enjoying. Also, as a last note, I will be reading the last book, just to see where things end.

It’s either break the rules or die.
Miki Jones lives her life by her own strict set of rules, to keep control, to keep the gray fog of grief at bay. Then she’s pulled into the Game, where she—and her team—will die unless she follows a new set of rules: those set by the mysterious Committee.
But rules don’t mean answers, and without answers, it’s hard to trust. People are dying. The rules are unraveling. And Miki knows she’s being watched, uncertain if it’s the Drau or someone—something—else. Forced to make impossible choices and battling to save those she loves, Miki begins to see the Committee in a glaring new light.
And then the Game crosses a new boundary, pushes harder into Miki’s and her friends’ lives, and there’s nothing in the rules that can save them now.
Push is the sequel Rush fans will be screaming for.

Eve Silver lives with her gamer husband and sons, sometimes in Canada, but often in worlds she dreams up. She loves kayaking and sunshine, dogs and desserts, and books, lots and lots of books. Watch for the first book in Eve’s new teen series, THE GAME: RUSH, coming from Katherine Tegen Books, June 2013. She also writes books for adults.
I think the concept of this books sounds interesting enough, but teenage drama always throws me off. I don't like it when there's so much teenage drama that it's like you don't see the other, less dramatic side of teens. This still might be one to try, if only for the stunning ending.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely read the third one and let you know. And yeah, bleurgh to teenage drama, I mean, I already have to go through that on a daily basis.
DeleteYour blog is really intriguing, it's definitely something about the banner that pulled me in your direction lol. Anywho, when I read the synopsis for both books, I kinda put it on my " Maybe I'll read, but probably won't list. " I've read so much YA last year, that I was trying to read less of it this time around, (impossible I know lol) but I'm thinking about really picking these up. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteI'm really fortunate for my awesome designer, Stephanie! Thanks so much for your kind words and dude, YA is the bomb. There's no such thing as too much YA. And if you do decide to pick them up, let me know what you think when you finish!
DeleteAww. After looking at your review and others, I don't think I'll be reading this series sadly. D:
ReplyDeleteI just don't have the time to read meh books, ESPECIALLY if it slows down in the middle.
i wish i had your mindset. i was hellbent on finishing the burn for burn trilogy and i feel like i wasted my time with the 2nd and third.
DeleteI've definitely read my fair share of books with slow middles but a great start and ending really leaves a much bigger impact for me. I haven't read this series yet but I'll give it a try if I could! I hope you like the last book, Nova!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I just didn't like how I felt on the fence about finishing it. I didn't seriously consider DNF-ing, but it was there in the back of my mind. And I'm definitely excited for the last book, whether I like it or not :)
DeleteThank you for your review, lady! I'll be binge reading this series when the third comes out, so fingers crossed I enjoyed it. The slow middle + teenage drama scares me - I'm not a fan of either. But the concept sounds so intriguing, as does the romance.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! <3
