My Thoughts
A cute and fun read about love that's out of this atmosphere. - Nova @ Out of Time
I was attracted to this book firstly, by it's cover. Not only is it pretty, but it also describes the story in a really beautiful way! It shows the contrast between characters like a human Cara and a L'eihr Aelyx. I anticipated this to be a lot more different than a lot of books I've read before with human and alien interactions.
I found this to be a cute read. It reminded me a little bit like a contemporary with a bunch of darker themes underlying it. It was more about the assimilation of aliens called L'eihrs on Earth. Have you ever wondered what would happen if Aliens showed themselves to us and had some kind of treaty/alliance? Melissa Landers sure has and the way it was describe it was both realistic and imaginative. It was darker than I expected it to be because of the public reaction to this new species as well as the conspiracies that were subtly inserted in the story.
I found the main character, Cara to be likeable. She didn't really connect to me personally, but I didn't have any problems with her. She did what she knew was right and didn't let anyone push her down, even though a lot of people were against her numerous times in the book. She was also genuine in her efforts to do her job to get Aelyx comfortable in the human world.
I actually loved Aelyx. I couldn't connect to him either; he was just so indifferent and inhumane. I adored that I got to see a gradual change in him from Cara. By the middle of the book, he grew feelings for her and started to actually behave with emotion and life. It made me so happy to see that major change and I didn't even notice it was happening until very far into the book. I loved Aelyx because of how much he acted like a Sherlock to me. He walked around with an air of superiority that he was better than all humans for his (far) advanced intellect and it was Cara who changed his opinion. It was also him who was running the whole "master plan" and him who grew the conscience in the end. I swooned so much over him, but ultimately, he deserves to be with someone as "human"(full of emotion and morals) as Cara.
I didn't know what to expect from this novel. The writing was absolutely fun. It was told with a casual tone that, at the same time, didn't seem like a joke or not professional enough. That was the main reason it reminded me of the contemporary genre! I enjoyed it a lot while reading!
This book, however, wasn't that serious. Though it had a few serious issues, I felt like they could've been handled better. At least in a way that would make me "feel". As a blogger, I read a lot of books (obviously). While reading, I was obviously entertained, but looking back on that time, I can't remember all that happened in this story. My socks weren't knocked off whereas there are some books I will read once and it will change my whole perspective on life; that or leave me in a daze for a couple of days.
If you're looking for a book that's very laid back with a couple of issues, a very hot boy and aliens, I definitely recommend this book. Fans of Sherlock will enjoy Aelyx's personality and transition as he learns more and more about what it really means to be human.

Melissa Landers is a former teacher who left the classroom to pursue other worlds. A proud sci-fi geek, she isn’t afraid to wear her Princess Leia costume in public—just ask her husband and three kids. She lives just outside Cincinnati and writes adult contemporary romance as Macy Beckett.
I've seen relatively good reviews for this one and I definitely sounds like a good science fiction and I'm glad that the main character is likable even if you didn't totally connect with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked the book! I wasn't sure if a book about alien and human interactions was going to be my thing, but your review sounds good! And haven't you noticed that if you unscramble L'eihrs, you get: L'heirs. Maybe the authors trying to tell us something O-O
ReplyDeleteThis one sounds like a light, fun read. I might pick it up sometime when I need something simple like that but I probably won't go out looking for it because sci fi never tends to work out well for me. The love interest sounds pretty nice though ;)
