I have this issue and it's more or less me. Reviews serve a purpose to give an opinion on a book from readers. A reviewer tells it like it is, but at the same time, it's still an opinion. Also, reviews at an average can give some awesome info on the quiality of a book. I'll believe it's good if 10 people out of 20 like the book as opposed to 10 people out of 100.
My "issue" (of sorts) is quite silly actually. I have this issue with reading reviews. The only time I can read a review is after I've read and reviewed the book in question. I read reviews to compare others' opinions to my own.
I have this problem if I read a review before a book. If it's a review, doesn't even matter WHO, that is negative to the book, I will have this negative mindset when I read. Also, vice versa with positive. It completely throws me. I'm not an easily influenced person, at least that's what I think. I just have this issue with reviews. I pick out things in the book that were stated in the review...

Huh, that's interesting. I don't have that problem. There are some books I've read because of a negative review and I ended up liking them. I did look for the things the reviewer pointed out that they didn't like but I didn't see them or ended up have a different perspective on them. I do like to know if a review is negative or positive before I read it though (which is why I like to glance at star ratings before I read reviews). I generally only read a review if I'm interested in the book in some way (cover, synopsis, etc.), loyal to a blogger (not sure if I should admit that), or if I've already read it and want to know what others think of it.
ReplyDeleteOoo, I'm similar in that I tend to only read reviews in full after reading a book. Beforehand, I only ever look at the rating and maybe skim it.
