In a way, I'm kind of the worst person to ask for recaps. When I'm at a signing, I don't really like filming or taking notes because I'd rather just enjoy the Q&A/chat for what it is and not have to worry about writing up a post. So yes, this is all from memory - hope it's enough.
Me with Sasha and Sarena Nanua! |
I didn't realize it, but I was situated beside Sarena and Sasha Nanua, authors of The Pendant Trilogy and bloggers! [Okay, that's a lie. I knew it was them. I just didn't want to say hi because I was afraid.]
One of them, [I'm sorry! I can't tell which] tapped me and asked if I was Nova. I was recognized in a public place - guys, I made it. That started the book chats to end all book chats. If you meet me in real life, I'm the most awkward person when I don't know you. One time, I tweeted the girl standing in front of me instead of talking to her because I wasn't sure if it was her. I need help. However, once I've confirmed you are who I think you are, I'm instantly comfortable. If we ever meet in real life, PLEASE MAKE THE FIRST MOVE. I'm physically incapable. [One reason I shouldn't go to BEA.]
The signing started off with Jenny reading the letter to Peter at the beginning of the book. It was fabulous and I was fangirling so hard on the inside. It's one thing to read it yourself but when she was reading it, I was hearing Lara Jean. [Also I looked around and people were red faced and squealing into their hands. It was so cool to see the "flails" in real life.]
After that, things quickly went to Q&A. Questions included what advice can you give young writers? [which I'm sure is a typical question] and which is your favorite book that you've written? The answers to these were too long to write down but condensed, the first one is to remember your teens years and make experiences. The second was how she explained that the first and the most recent are always really important [and if she thinks that way, it's basically every book since every book is a "most recent" at one point in
time.]
There were also some ship related questions but I was clueless since I haven't read PSISLY. I planned on reading it before the signing but alas, life happened. The good part: this signing only made me more excited to read it!
I asked the question of would you consider writing something outside of contemporary? and [squeal] the answer was yes! I don't know about you guys, but I want to read a Jenny Han sci fi or a high fantasy. That would be cool!
The signing itself took like five minutes [more like fifteen] because I was near the front. However, when I got my picture taken, it was realllllly bad [flash mishaps... as in, it wasn't on] so I waited until the signing was over to take another one. Jenny was so cool about it and she's honestly so pretty. I'm so jealous!
I still look a little loopy but you know what? IT'S JENNY HAN. |
Funny story is that Patty asked my name and I told her Amelia. A milisecond later, I realized that I'm supposed to say Nova. So I was like "Amelia... nope, Nova" and I think I might've weirded Patty out a little. It was funny on both our ends after I explained it.
SEE THIS IS WHY I CAN'T
excuse the "Amelia" |
That's awesome that you got to meet Jenny Han! Dont feel bad though, I think most bloggers.bookish people like ourselves are shy and don't like approaching people. Although, I would still do anything to go to BEA. Signings are so much fun and I'm really hoping i get to go to more in the upcoming year. I can't wait to start this series finally and now i'll be able to read both at once.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to go to this signing so bad but it was too far from where I live :( Glad you had a good time though. I can't wait to read PS. I Still Love You
ReplyDeleteThis is a great recap. I'm like you, just wanting to enjoy the experience. And I think your recap is a great one that shows the emotions involved and all the feels you get when you meet an author you adore. I like this type of recap more than the Q&A type anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting! I haven't read any of her books. But it must be so cool to go to an author signing and get to talk to them and see them in person! Wow! And then be around her other fans too and talk books even though you don't know each other well. That's so awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm really shy and awkward in person too. I'm not sure I could actually start a conversation if I saw someone I knew from the blogsphere. I might, might say 'hi.' Just depending on my level of bravery that particular day. If, in the moment, I could focus more on how much it would make that person day when I walk up and say, "Hey, I follow your blog and think you're really cool," instead of thinking, "Oh man! What am I supposed to say? How do I talk? What if we just say hi and then stand there awkwardly staring at the ground? WHAT IS VERBAL CONVERSING?!" then I could do it. But the latter is usually what consumes my mind when meeting people in general. . .
Ohhhh you luck butt I would die to meet Jenny! I was almost going to but plans fell through and I had to wave goodbye to her. :( It looks like you had a great time though! Good Nova, socializing. I actually had to get a retake with an author once. My friend's photo skills aren't the best and so I had to wait the whole entire line again when I met Keira Cass. It was all good though! You both look so cute in your picture. Loved your recap and I'm glad you had a great time. :)
ReplyDelete~Kaitlin @ Next Page Please!
Nope, I haven't met Jenny or read any of her books - I might be ashamed of myself, lol.
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone with not going to BEA! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't make a peep unless someone starts a conversation with me (even then I would be awkward. What if I trip?). Plus, I don't use my real life photo OR my name, so it makes it harder. I can even imagine the awkward looks if, say, my actual name is Suzy and that would be what my name tag would say. Someone's bound to ask who Suzy from Bookwyrming Thoughts is.
(It's not Suzy.)
It's a rarity if I meet an author. Being in Missouri, most authors go to Kansas City or St. Charles, which is EXTREMELY far away from where I'm at.
Glad you had a great time! :)
I keep seeing this book and I feel like I need to read it! That signing sounds so fun! I've never been to an author event that was that crazy! I always seem to end up at some small time author talk, that is interesting, but I have no idea who they are or what they've written.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm a fellow Canadian *high fives*!
