Blogger/Reader Fails

with 34 comments

In daily life, I'd like to think that I commit at least five fails a week a day an hour. Don't judge me! This includes locking my locker before I get something out, asking a question that was just asked or tripping up the stairs. Yes, the last one happened. No, it wasn't as fluid as JLaw's fall because unlike her, I didn't get right back up.

Now, thinking of all these little "fails" here and there, I'm bringing you a bunch of these fails that are blogging or bookish related. Most of them are from a while back, call it a faux pas for being a newbie blogger. But you'd be shocked, a lot of them are actually pretty recent.

Participating in a really heated fandom discussion and messing up a character's name.
Listen, I have to deal with thousands of characters from all the books I've read. I'm sorry if my pronounciation of a character's name is enough to stop a conversation and make a person go:

Listening to an audiobook and having the chapters on shuffle.
This is recent, I have no shame in admitting this. It jumped from the main character on a bus to a main character talking to the king in the castle. At first, I didn't catch on but eventually... You should've seen me going "why is this novel going all over the place?" I think I was listening to it for a good hour before I decided to actually check what was going on.

Contacting the wrong publisher for a request.
I want to bury myself in a hole when I do this. I can't help it! Sometimes, I associate an author with a publisher and when they switch, I've got it in my head that they're with someone else. And the worst part is that I'm not going to have to deal with the publicist face to face but that makes me feel even worse.
[Sometimes, they don't even reply because it's so much of a fail.]

Forgetting your page, finding your "page" and not realizing that the page you found was not your page.
Whoa, that was strange to write. So let me break it down. I forgot my page once and then tried to find it. I eventually settled on a page that seemed right in vague memory but it wasn't until I read the chapter that I realized... THIS IS NOT MY PAGE! And then you're forced to keep searching - wasting valuable reading time.

Buying a second in a series before the first.
Basically, buying a book that isn't the first when you haven't read the first. Sometimes, a book won't say that its not the first in the series and I'll be honest, I'm way too lazy to look up Goodreads in a bookstore when I'm trying to settle for one book.
It's upsetting because now you either have to read the first book or revel in your shame. And even if you read the first one, there's no guarantee that you'll like it. Which leads to reveling in the shame again.

Calling a blogger the wrong name/mistaking a blogger in a public place.
If it were twitter, a mistake like this would never happen because of bios and their twitter image but in real life, I'm so prone to these kinds of mistakes at signings. Whoops.

That's it for our show today, folks. It actually wasn't hard to come up with these fails, they're pretty much written in my brain, as much as I hate to admit it. Fails happen to the best of us so tell me something funny you've done in the blogging/reading world. Please. I don't want to feel like the only one who does this kind of thing.

Haha, this is BRILLIANCE. And no, don't worry, you're NOT the only one who does ridiculously stupid things like this. Do you know how many times I've come back from a library only to realize I've borrowed the sequel of something? Neither do I, 'cause I've lost count I've done it so often. I do a little more research when I buy books--so that hasn't happened to me... yet. Lol. Another terribly embarrassing thing I've done when it comes to blogging was getting an author's name wrong in a review. Gosh. Luckily, at the time I was a new blogger and didn't have many people reading it--but I was still terribly embarrassed.

    Brilliant post. <3

OH MY GOODNESS. One time, I sent a wrong review request to an author! Thankfully, she was nice enough to send me a copy of her book for review even though my email request involved a completely different title that she hadn't even heard about it. LOL.

Great post, Nova. You made my day with this, HAHA!

HAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHA AUDIOBOOK ON SHUFFLE That sounds like just the mistake I would make if I listened to them. Happily though, I am anti audiobook. I like to be dependent on myself the most ha

Omg the wrong publisher freaks me out so much, I have to like double, triple check before I send an email haha

Oh I am so guilty of buying the second book without reading the first all the time! And of getting books for review without even knowing they are part of a series. Am I wrong, or should that always be a part of the request?? I am also guilty of the character name thing. Sometimes I will sit down to write a review and totally blank on the names too.

Great post! You are not alone haha

Hahah, I've totally dreaded doing some of these, especially the blogger and publisher ones! I get embarrassed so easily and know I would obsess about it for days and feel like a fool. But, well, we all make blunders right?
    Love this post! :)

Oh my goodness! Contacting the wrong publisher would be super embarrassing. :/

I hate it when books don't specify if they're the first, the second, or the fifteenth!

I did a link up with a blog once and forgot to actually link up. -_- And I always have to double check my own spelling when I help other people with edits. Spelling is one of my worst writing faults. That and I always seem to write the word what when I mean want? How? I don't even know...

EXACTLY! Is it so hard to put a number in the spine or something?

AND I don't link up as much so I don't have that problem but I occassionally spell my name wrong when signing up for blog tours.

"Buying a second in a series before the first"- I really dislike how there are so many series where the books don't have labels as to what number in the series they are! I mean, really, is it so hard to have a nice little page in the front of the book that shows the series order?! Gahhh!

I can relate so hard to this post that it physically hurts, haha! I don't listen to audiobooks, but I would probably put it on shuffle if I did, so no judgement there! YES I'VE CONTACTED THE WRONG PUBLISHER MULTIPLE TIMES. It's actually more embarrassing if they reply, because then you'd have to justify your laziness to double and triple check. Yes to buying the non-first book in a series! Sometimes I do it on purpose... if they're on sale. xD

Oh my god. I accidentally downloaded the second in a series on NetGalley (I WAS SO SURE I WAS DOWNLOADING THE FIRST) and now that I'm reading it I'm really really not enjoying it. At least I have the second one for pure curiosity's sake to see if it gets better, but I still want to roll around in shame. At least I don't have to worry about contacting the wrong publisher because I'm too nervous to ever email anyone ever. Sigh.

I can't tell you how many times I've tripped up stairs in the lecture hall or the dining hall since I started college. I've ruined three bananas because I've been holding them when I fell.

I just sent a request email yesterday for an ARC of Six of Crows, because hey, why not, Leigh is coming here. I'd love to give it to her to sign. Anyway, I usually just copy paste a previous email, and then edit, but what happened was I was just editing the name of the publisher, I hit enter, and I have no how it got sent but I sent it. The contents were correct, the name of the publisher was wrong, and I didn't have a subject.

*hides face in shame* Goodbye, all my hopes!

AGHHH I have asked the wrong publisher for a book before. So. embarrassed. Seriously, I was absolutely mortified and I've done it twice to the same publisher. I swear I have no idea how it happened. ANYWAY. I do embarrassing things all. the. time. Epic of epic fails. Like the other day I was feeding my dog and his food was super hot so i stuck it in the freezer for cool for 10 seconds...then forgot about it and went to eat my lunch. My dog was SO UPSET (um, rightfully so) and just was running around being a pain and I was telling him off...until my mum opened the freezer and is like "Why is his food in here?" So. Um. #worstdogownerever

ALSO THAT LAST ONE. That's why I always have the same screen name and profile pic everywhere because I mess up other people so much. I'm embarrassed. MY LIFE IS EMBARRASSING. Anyway, best. post. ever.

Luckily, I have never sent the wrong request to any publisher before (mainly because I'm OCD so I tend to double-check everything haha). But omg. I did buy a second book on accident. I totally agree with Nara! They should have put the series order somewhere on the cover or the spine of the book :/

The audio book shuffle definitely happened to me recently - all of a sudden my brain goes, "Hey! Didn't you JUST listen to this several hours ago?!"

You don't even want to know how many times one of my cobloggers correct me in book club for getting a character's name wrong. I haven't actually bought a second book by accident before. Maybe it's because I have the tendency to hunt it down on Goodreads first before being cluck-happy. Then again, I'm not allowed to buy books in a bookstore, so technically, I end up smelling used books. Sneezing involved.

Also, I drop things more than I trip. Good thing it's never anything expensive! YET.

The publicist one must have been quite awkward! I've never sent an ARC request before-in fear of rejection-but if I do,I'll probably do that mistake a lot.The whole concept of imprints and books having different publishers confuses me.A LOT! *scratches head*

OH. Yes. I’ve done the audiobook on shuffle thing and was like WHAT- though imagine if it happened when you were on the last disc and you skipped to the massive spoiler of the whole book. That’d be the worst of it, I think. Erugh. The idea is making me internally cringe! Horrifying.

*small voice* I did the contacting the wrong publisher thing, too. It was so awful! I’ve actually done it twice, and I sent a link to a review to the wrong publisher, once! It was really quite embarrassingly terrible.
I have a really good knack for finding my page whenever I lose it, which is fantastic. I can just open the book right back onto the old page. I count this, for sure, as one of my top talents.
Your profile description is hilarious and magnificent, by the way! Totally captured my attention without me even intending to read it! X

I am mentally cringing at the prospect of contacting the publisher for the wrong book! That would be so embarrassing! Hahaha! I'm not sure if I had any epic blogger fails... do glaring typos count? Oh, right! I know now! I once already chose a winner for this giveaway of mine on Twitter only to realize later that I WAS A DAY TOO EARLY TO EVEN PICK ONE. I was like "OH CRAP WHAT DO I DO" and I was like "OH WELL, I'LL JUST PRETEND IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN THIS WAY." but trust me, I was so ashamed and embarrassed deep inside hahahahah
