[Snow Like Ashes] is like Frozen in book form. With more action, romance and destinies... okay maybe it isn't that much like Frozen, but it's got the same level of appeal! - Nova @ Out of Time
Well what can I say? I really enjoyed this one, that much is sure. I'm also doing a twitter party for it (and I only ask authors whom I really like!) I found it exciting and thrilling, which is why I usually like in a book. I can't stand to be bored, that's what school is for. However, a book with too many events is bad. Snow Like Ashes had a great transition between big points and small "fillers."
I didn't really like some of the events though. It was predictable and tiring. Certain things (that I can't mention) had me rolling my eyes. I knew it was going to happen because it does in every story. To think of it, I don't really think there were many surprises in this book. Wish there were more!
The main character is someone I had conflicting emotions with. Miera was both selfless and stupid. You know that YA character who is selfless but also wants to always offer themselves as a martyr for no reason? That was pretty much Miera, except she wasn't "stupid." I could see where she was coming from, but certain times, I just wanted to grab her and say "they know best! If you go there, you're going to be killed!!!" But on the flip side, she developed over the course of the book. Her character matured and she thought of big picture rather than her teen desires. I liked that change, it made me feel like a proud parent.
Ooh, feels! I got nice mild feels. For those who don't know, I ship Jelsa, which is Jack Frost (from Rise of the Guardians) and Elsa (from Frozen). I just felt like Miera and Mather were my book form of Jelsa. I loved that. Their interactions were both feels-y and appropriate. And yes, this book came without the "does he like me?" cliche. I enjoyed how strong their characters fit together. I also got a bunch of angry feels from the villain (who I would actually love to hear more about. He seems complex.)
Finally, Sara's writing is something noteworthy. I enjoyed the artistic style that was demonstrated in Snow Like Ashes. It was beautiful to read and I fell in love with the setting. I feel because it's a different world, description and world building are necessary and though I didn't a ton of world building, it was enough to pass and succeed for me, as the reader.

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.
Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
