I listened to covers of this song before the original. Then I listen to the original. It's enough to say that they were both equally good and different. One thing I noticed was that the covers usually featured females, so the tune was changed and transposed a bit because of how low it is. The singer in OneRepublic pulls it off as well as he can, but because of how low it is, it sounds a bit dull.
There is so much in the chorus. The highs and the lows make for such an interesting song. But I feel like it's so interesting there than the verses honestly sound boring and like dull rap because there isn't a melody in the background music until the pre-chorus.
This song peps me up whenever I listen to it. This is a little personal, but I get asked what I want to be all the time. I reply "musician" every time and I get told that it isn't realistic or that I'll be on the streets. Whenever I listen to the song, I think of the line "said no more counting dollars, we'll be counting stars" and that makes me feel a little better. It's more important to think about your dreams than what you make off something else. At least, that's my interpretation.
And it helps that I don't listen to radio because a lot of people have said how it's being "ruined" for being overplayed. Blech.

"Counting Stars"
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Yeah, we'll be counting stars
[Verse 1]
I see this life
Like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
I feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
[Verse 2]
I feel the love
And I feel it burn
Down this river every turn
Hope is our four letter word
Make that money
Watch it burn
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
And I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
Oh, oh, oh.
[Bridge 4x:]
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons I learned
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
[Outro 4x:]
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sing in the river
The lessons I learned

Counting Stars has always been a little too pop-y so I liked their other music a lot better, like Burning Bridges and stuff, but I do like the concept behind it. I'm glad that you liked this one, though, I've heard it on the radio so many times!
