Song Review: Summertime Sadness - Lana Del Rey

with 2 comments
Title: Summertime Sadness
Artist: Lana Del Rey
Album: Born to Die
Release Date: June 22nd, 2012
Record Label: Interscope Records
iTunes
"Summertime Sadness"

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best

I got my red dress on tonight
Dancing in the dark in the pale moonlight
Done my hair up real big beauty queen style
High heels off, I'm feeling alive

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above are sizzling like a snare
Honey, I'm on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothing scares me anymore

(1, 2, 3, 4)

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I'm feelin' electric tonight
Cruising down the coast goin' 'bout 99
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side
I know if I go, I'll die happy tonight

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above are sizzling like a snare
Honey, I'm on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothing scares me anymore

(1, 2, 3, 4)

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I think I'll miss you forever
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky
Later's better than never
Even if you're gone I'm gonna drive (drive, drive)

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

My Thoughts

I know a lot of people who rave about Lana Del Rey. Not listening to radio, I'd never heard her before. So this is me listening to Summertime Sadness and honestly, my first impression is "what the heck am I listening to her?"

She reminds me a bit like Florence + the Machine and Lorde. They're all singers who prefer their low range, but have a high reach too. The difference is that I actually like Florence + the Machine and Lorde. I don't like Lana. I don't know why people think she's phenomenal. I don't see it.

Okay, she can sing, but Summertime Sadness is boring me instead of actually making me feel sad. She sings like she's bored and even though the song is called Summertime Sadness, I don't feel ANYTHING. I like it when a song makes me feel something. Summertime Sadness sounds like background noise with her singing "Summertime Sadness" over again and adding a few stutters here and there.

She reminds me of Lorde because of their voice type and how they 8va their songs. Basically the singers will sing the song in the lower range and sing the same part one octave higher. And then they mix it. In this song, it kind of annoys me that there's this high voice in the background because there's no equal in how it's mixed.

I am absolutely enthralled by this song. When I first heard this song, I thought it was by Delta Rae, who do the song Bottom of the River (which uses actual chains to as an instrument). I think Lana Del Ray has an absolutely haunting voice. It's like a perfect mix between Jewel and Evanescence.

Summertime Sadness is more mainstream than her other songs, particularly the remix. Her other songs are full stories. Summertime Sadness is more repetitive, so it is an emotion rather than a story. It's that pit you feel after the person you love leaves you forever.

For me, I didn't connect to the song at all, but I'm glad to hear another opinion of someone who likes it.
